1938

Miller Tucker (ENG), Rock Hill, S.C., received the master's degree in liberal arts from Winthrop College at commencement exercises last December. He retired in 1972 from his job as a research administrator with General Foods. He is active in community theater and is continuing to take courses at Winthrop.

1940

Henry Doyle Wattenbarger (AG & NAT RES), Kingston, Tenn., retired after working 38 years for the USDA Farmer's Home Administration, 12 years for Bank of Roane County, and three years part-time for Roane County Highway Department. He was president of Roane-Morgan County's Deacon's Union for 42 years; president and secretary of Kingston Lions Club for 45 years; and master and secretary of Kingston Union Masonic Lodge for 30 years.

1951

Dr. Louis Ball (A&S) retired as dean of fine arts at Carson-Newman College in Jefferson City, Tenn. He joined the faculty of the music department in 1961 as associate professor and was named chair in 1963. He became coordinator of the division of fine arts in 1978 and dean in 1994. He supervised the departments of art, communication arts, and music. He and his wife, Mary Charlotte, live in Johnson City, Tenn.

1952

Dr. Chester L. Foy (AG & NAT RES), professor of plant physiology/weed science at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, Blacksburg, Va., received the 1996 International Weed Science Society's Outstanding Achievement Award-Developed Countries. His primary responsibilities are research (basic and applied) and teaching in the areas of weed science and plant growth regulation. He has directed (as major advisor) 40 master's and Ph.D. students from 11 countries and served on numerous committees in weed science/plant physiology. He is vice president/secretary and founding board member of the new international Association of Formulation Chemists.

Murray Miles (AG & NAT RES) retired in January 1995 after 40 years with the Tennessee Farm Bureau in Columbia, Tenn., where he was director of communications and editor of the Tennessee Farm Bureau News. He spent the past two years writing the history of the Tennessee Farm Bureau, From the Ground Up. The 400-page book went on sale in December 1996 at the 75th annual meeting of the organization.

Dr. Bill Scarbrough (EDU) recently completed his fourth assignment as visiting professor of English at Sichuan Union University in Chengdu, Sichuan Province, People's Republic of China.

1953

Dr. Gene Caldwell (AG & NAT RES) represents the 33rd district (part of Anderson County) in the Tennessee House of Representatives. A pediatrician for 33 years, he retired from the Children's Clinic of Oak Ridge in 1993. He served as a career Navy officer for 10 years. He and his wife, Bobbie McCoy Caldwell '53 (HE) live in Clinton, Tenn. They have four grown children.

Shirley S. Rudd Dunagan (HE) retired after 28 years as director and teacher of the Child Study Cooperative Nursery, run by the psychology department at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. A child development specialist, she joined SIU in 1968. Prior to that, she taught at preschools affiliated with universities in Texas, Tennessee, Indiana, and a U.S. Air Force base in Alaska.

Jackie Kersh (CBA), public relations director at Stetson University in Deland, Fla., has been named to the state executive committee of the Florida Public Relations Association.

Elizabeth Valker Lauricella (EDU), a New Orleans community activist and philanthropist, has been awarded Loyola University's Integritas Vitae Award. The honor recognizes moral character and service without expectation of material reward or public recognition. She has served as president of the boards of Children's Hospital, the Girl Scouts of Southeastern Louisiana, the Academy of the Sacred Heart, and the Catholic Foundation of the Archdiocese of New Orleans. She is married to Hank Lauricella '53, former Louisiana state senator.

1954

David M. Alexander (CBA) has been named vice president for business affairs at Niagara University. He joined Niagara after retiring as director of financial affairs at Clarkson University, Potsdam, N.Y., where he worked for 15 years. He joined Clarkson in 1981 as controller and was named director of financial operations in 1987. He previously was comptroller of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

Edgar Lee Floyd (AG & NAT RES) retired after teaching vocational agriculture for 38 years at Gleason (Tenn.) High School.

1959

Sen. Brad Carter (ENG) represents District 33 (in Lauderdale County) in the Mississippi legislature. He is vice chairman of the Senate education committee and executive contingent fund committee. Other committee assignments include appropriations, economic development, tourism and parks, highways and transportation, judiciary, juvenile justice, and municipalities. He also is a member of the joint facilities management advisory committee. He is founder of Carter Miller Associates Ltd. and an engineering consultant registered professionally in 16 states. He is a member of Chi Epsilon civil engineering fraternity, Pi Kappa Alpha, the Meridian Board of Appeals, and American Quarter Horse Association, past president the Meridian Municipal School District's board of trustees and the Kiwanis Club, and chairman of the Salvation Army board.

1960

Charles D. Hardin (ENG) has been named a fellow in ISA, the international society for measurement and control. The rank of fellow recognizes his contributions to development and application of instrument and control systems for chemical process safety. He is a senior engineer at Hoechst Celanese in Corpus Christi, Tex.

Donald Y. "Don" Sharp (CBA), Marietta, Ga., is senior vice president and director of investor relations for First Data Corp. He also was elected to the board of directors of the Atlanta chapter of the National Investor Relations Institute.

1961

Will J. Pugh CPA (CBA), Knoxville, was elected southeast regional director of the National Association of State Boards of Accountancy for 1996-97. He is president of Pugh & Company P.C.

Ronald J. "Hank" Thompson (ENG) was re-elected mayor of Hendersonville, Tenn., Nov. 5, 1996, to a four-year term.

1962

Paul W. Emery II (CBA), Danville, Calif., is vice president of finance and administration and chief financial officer of Borland International Inc.

James L. Herbert (AG & NAT RES), president and CEO of Neogen Corp., Lansing, received the Michigan 1996 Entrepreneur of the Year Award in the category of high technology. The award recognizes companies based on their growth in earnings, employees, and revenues. Entrepreneurs also are judged on social and community efforts.

1963

James Haskell Claunch (SW), a licensed clinical social worker in Brandon, Miss., was presented the Kinlock Gill Award of Excellence and Dedication at the annual meeting of the Mississippi Community Mental Health/Mental Retardation Council in Biloxi last November. The award was presented by his colleagues for leadership in developing and providing services for mental health, mental retardation, and substance abuse programs. He was director of the division of accreditation and licensure for the department of mental health when he retired in December 1993 with 37 years of state service, 26 in mental health and mental retardation programs.

1964

Stephan T. Denton (CBA) retired last June after 30 years with the Fulton County Schools (Atlanta) as a marketing education coordinator.

Dr. Bob J. Frye (A&S), an English professor at Texas Christian University, was named 1996 Texas Professor of the Year by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. He was selected from among 40 nominees representing 27 schools. A native of Plainview, Tex., he specializes in 18th century British literature.

Linda Jennings Higgins (CBA) is the first elected city court clerk and the first female to win a city-wide election in Jackson, Tenn.

John J. "Tip" Talone Jr. (ENG) is director of the Space Station Hardware Integration Office at Kennedy Space Center in Florida. He enjoys playing golf.

1965

Wayne McAmis (CBA) is executive vice president of Southwire Company in Carrollton, Ga.

1966

John C. Hodgson (CBA) is vice president and general manager of the new DuPont Photopolymer and Electronic Materials business unit. He lives in Raleigh, N.C., with his wife, Lynda.

Thomas Lawson Jr. (CBA), Birmingham, Ala., wrote Logging Railroads of Alabama (Cabbage Stack Publishing, Birmingham), a book about the railroads that once served the timberlands of Alabama.

Harry L. Morris Jr. (ENG) is vice president for corporate engineering and construction for Eastman Chemical Co. An Eastman employee for 30 years, he previously served as director, international projects, North and Latin America. He is a licensed professional engineer in Tennessee and South Carolina. He and his wife, Sharon, live in Kingsport, Tenn.

Warren W. Riggs (ENG) is senior technical associate for Eastman Chemical Co. He is a 31-year Eastman employee and a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. He and his wife, Patricia, live in Kingsport, Tenn.

Dr. H.E. "Buster" Dunsmore (A&S) is a computer science professor at Purdue University, West Lafayette, Ind. His research areas include the Internet, the World Wide Web, software engineering, and object-oriented design and programming. He received the 1996 Charles B. Murphy Outstanding Undergraduate Teacher Award and two previous outstanding teaching awards. He is a member of Phi Beta Kappa and Upsilon Pi Epsilon (honor society for the computing sciences).

Dr. Bennett Judkins (A&S), associate professor of sociology at Lenoir-Rhyne College, Hickory, N.C., has been named to the North Carolina Humanities Council for a three-year term.
Robert E. Selwyn (CBA) is chief operating officer at Granite Broadcasting Co., based in Manhattan.

1969

K. Michael Henshaw (ENG) is president of Lockheed Martin Missiles and Space, headquartered in Sunnyvale, Calif.

1970

J. Christian "Chris" Busch (EDU) retired from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro with 26 years of service. He was head of the department of educational research methodology from 1993 to 1995 and associate director of the Center for Educational Research.

1971

William M. "Mac" Burnett (AG & NAT RES) works for Memphis Hardware, Bruce, Miss., and his wife, Cheryl Seal Burnett '72 (EDU), is librarian at Bruce Middle School.
Larry Leahy (A&S) is chief operating officer for Ruth Constant and Associates, Victoria, Tex., a home care management and consulting corporation. He was elected to a two-year term on the Texas Association for Home Care's nominating committee and chairs the association's hospice committee.

1972
1973

Howard B. Allenberg (CBA) is vice chairman and chief operating officer of BDO Seidman LLP in Chicago. He was admitted to the partnership in 1982 and served as director of accounting and auditing in the Memphis office until March 1990, when he was appointed managing director of the Milwaukee office. In April 1993 he became managing director of the Detroit office and served in that position until Oct. 1, when he assumed his present position. He is a member of numerous professional and community organizations. He and his wife, Wendy, have two children.

1974

Terry E. Smith (CBA), principal broker and partner of RCM Realty, has been awarded the certified commercial investment member designation by the National Association of Realtors. He also is accredited by the Society of Industrial and Office Realtors. He has been a member of the Greater Nashville Association of Realtors for 13 years and is currently president. He was an original director of Nashville's Commercial Investment Division when it was formed in 1988, and was president in 1991.

Dr. Sandra P. Thomas (EDU), professor and director of the nursing doctoral program at UTK, has coauthored Use Your Anger: A Woman's Guide to Empowerment, (Pocket Books, New York). The book's aim is to help women learn to express anger in a direct, effective way. Cheryl Jefferson, a Chicago writer, is coauthor.

Arthur L. Williams (A&S) is new director of the Jefferson County, Ky., Air Pollution Control District. He is a partner in the Louisville, Ky., law firm of Woodward, Hobson & Fulton. He was commissioner of the state department for environmental protection in the natural resources cabinet from October 1988 to mid-1990. He previously served as the cabinet's general counsel.

1975

Kenneth A. Cutshaw (A&S) was selected to join the Council on Foreign Relations, based in New York City. The council is recognized for its leadership in foreign policy. Cutshaw is an adjunct fellow of the Hudson Institute, based in Indianapolis, Ind. He practices international business and regulatory law in Atlanta with the firm Smith Gambrell & Russell, LLP. He chairs the Atlanta Boy Scouts International Committee, the political event known as Awakening Weekend, and co-chairs the American Council for Young Political Leaders. He has published several books including ones on doing business in China and India.

Navy Cmdr. John R. Parrott (A&S) participated in "Dynamic Mix/Damsel Fair '96," while serving with Commander, Sixth Fleet, aboard the Flagship USS La Salle, home ported in Gaeta, Italy. The exercise was a NATO-led, multinational exercise conducted in the Mediterranean and Aegean seas.

Frederick S. "Rick" Slagle (CBA) is treasurer and chief financial officer of the Marcus Foundation in Atlanta. He was the partner in charge of the Lawrenceville, Ga., office of Tiller, Stewart Co. LLC, CPAs. He is the son of Warren Slagle '50, retired UTK professor of accounting.

Virginia "Ginger" Harrison Carney (HE) is clinical nutrition manager and registered dietitian at LeBonheur Children's Medical Center in Memphis. She has been re-certified as an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant. She was president of Lactation Education and Promotion in Memphis (affiliate of International Lactation Consultant Association). She lives with her husband and three children in Memphis.

Dr. Rachael A. Shultz (INF SC) received the Ed.D. in postsecondary and private sector administration from East Tennessee State University. Her doctoral research focused on the qualifications of corporate training directors. She is senior program specialist in the Office of Postsecondary Education at the U.S. Department of Education in Washington, D.C. She lives in Manassas, Va.

Vivian Jacox Zedler (A&S), Oak Ridge, Tenn., is serving a three-year term on the board of directors of the U.S. branch of the Western Front Association, an international organization for people interested in World War I. Zedler is the author of A Private in World War I.

1977

Carol Cantrell Knott (A&S) is a mathematics teacher at the Woodlands (Tex.) High School and was named teacher of the year for 1995. Her husband, Erol Knott '77 (ENG), is a project manager for Brown and Root Braun.

Rex L. Repass (COM), Cincinnati, Ohio, is president and chief operating officer of MarketVision Research, a marketing and communications research firm with offices in Cincinnati, Charlotte, Orlando, Dallas, and Indianapolis.

Herb Rose (COM) of Raleigh, N.C., vice president of sales and marketing of consumer products at Trion Inc., has been appointed to the board of directors of the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America, Washington, D.C.

Robert L. "Larry" Rose Jr. (COM) is executive producer of the syndicated television program, America's Dumbest Criminals, seen in 120 U.S. markets and 34 countries. The Entheos Group, the company Rose co-founded in 1994 with Daniel Butler, also produced a book by the same name. A second book, Wanted! Dumb or Alive, was released last November. Rose is on the board of directors of the UTNAA-Davidson County alumni chapter. He and his wife, Suzanne, live in Nashville with their two children.

Robert Vosburgh (ENG), Ames, Iowa, is senior vice president for strategic programs, Norwest Investments and Insurance.

Dr. Larry N. Williams Jr. (A&S) is director of the U.S. Navy branch dental clinic at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard, Portsmouth, Va. He is a commander in the Navy Dental Corps and is active in the Navy's tobacco cessation program. He has published several articles on the subject and is active in tobacco cessation research. He and his wife, Vicki Lynn Yates Williams '81, have two children and live in Virginia Beach, Va.

Roxanne L. Williams AIA (HE) is senior architect in the Washington, D.C., office of RTKL Associates Inc., an international architecture, planning, and engineering firm. She has received more than 15 awards for various projects and been featured in several exhibitions. Prior to joining the D.C. office, she spent 10 years in the Baltimore office of RTKL. Previously, she was with Glenn and Williams Architects Inc.

1978

Dr. Samuel Uwa Osemota (EDU) retired from Federal Polytechnic, Auchi, Nigeria. Former head of the department of office management, he is now on contract appointment with Edo State University, Ekpoma, to help set up a department of business education. His wife, Lucy A. Osemota '79 (EDU), is deputy librarian at Federal Polytechnic.

Joseph S. Wigington (ENG) is director of engineering for the Morristown, Tenn., Utility Commission, where he has directed power and water activities since 1995. He previously worked for TVA, BASF Corp., and Lenzing Fibers. He lives in White Pine, Tenn., with his wife, Renee, and their three children.

Rev. William "Bill" Gupton (COM) has been ordained to the Unitarian Universalist ministry and is associate minister at the First Unitarian Universalist Church of Columbus, Ohio.
David Lochbaum (ENG), Marietta, Ga., is senior nuclear engineer of the Union of Concerned Scientists.

Harold A. Stiles (ENG), Raleigh, N.C., joined the regulatory affairs unit at Carolina Power & Light Co. He is responsible for long-term strategic planning for nuclear regulatory issues.
Carolyn E. Stinnett (EDU) is director of the Knox County Schools Family Resource Center, which serves inner city families. She received her Ph.D. in education (holistic teaching and learning) in December.

Dr. V. Alan White (A&S) of the University of Wisconsin Center-Manitowoc County was named the 1996 Professor of the Year for Wisconsin by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. White earned his Ph.D., at UTK in 1982.

1980

Marine Maj. Truman D. Anderson (EDU) reported for duty with Personnel Support Department 17, Marine Wing Support Group 17, 1st Marine Aircraft Wing, Okinawa, Japan.

Navy Cmdr. Joseph C. Lodmell (A&S) graduated with distinction from the Naval War College. During the 10-month course in Newport, R.I., students take postgraduate classes in strategy and policy, national security decision-making, and joint military operations.

Navy Lt. Cmdr. Joseph S. Lyon (A&S) graduated from the Naval War College in Newport, R.I., and was awarded a master of arts degree in national security and strategic studies.
1981

David W. Bradley (CBA), first vice president-investments with the Nashville branch of Prudential Securities, received a Prudential Community Champions Award of $500 to benefit the Metropolitan Nashville YMCA Youth Community Action Project. He has been a volunteer with Y-CAP for more than six years.

Irwin Eve (A&S) is an optician and owner of Occhiali Fine Eyewear in the Santa Barbara, Calif., area.

Navy Lt. Cmdr. Thomas V. Halley (CBA) received the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal. He was cited for superior performance of duty while serving as assistant training officer. He serves with Strike Fighter Squadron 81, Naval Air Station Cecil Field, Jacksonville, Fla.

Joan Ginsberg Lauther (COM) is a million dollar producer with Bowen Realty in West Palm Beach, Fla. She is president of Wellington Exchangettes, a women's civic club. She lives in Wellington, Fla., with her husband, Bob, and daughter.

Jim Sexton (COM) is an associate editor at USA Weekend magazine in Washington, D.C. He is responsible for health and science coverage and has written profiles of Garth Brooks, John Daly, and FDA Chief David Kessler.

1982

Don C. Irwin (A&S), an F-16 fighter weapons instructor pilot, completed the Air Force's Air Command and Staff College Summer '96 and is assigned to the Pentagon in the HQ USAF Directorate of Test and Evaluation as the chief of fighter test and evaluation. He is also pursuing a degree in computer science at George Washington University in Washington, D.C.

Kevin Janiga (CBA) is vice president, director of marketing for Jack Daniel's Brewery, with Brown-Forman Beverages Worldwide, North American Group, Spirits Brands Company. He is based in Louisville, Ky.

Robert S. Morris (ENG) is vice president/chief information officer of Dickens Data Systems in Roswell, Ga. His wife, Mary Ann Bowles Morris '82, teaches sixth grade in Gwinnett County, Ga., where they live with their son and daughter.

Todd M. Olson (COM) launched Hometown Values Magazine in West and North Knoxville. He sold his Naples (Fla.) Coupon Magazine business, which he owned and operated for the past three years. He and his wife live in Knoxville.

Rick Snyder (A&S) was selected to serve as 1996-97 director of youth ministry for the Mercer Baptist Association in Harrodsburg, Ky.

1983

Dave Carver (CBA), Madison, N.J., has been named head of field representative services for Novartis Pharmaceuticals Corp. He directs the administrative, process, and regulatory services that support the sales organization of more than 2,000 employees.

Thomas W. Chapman (A&P) is the owner of Successive Graphics, a computer animation and photo realistic rendering service for architects, interior designers, and corporate accounts. He and his wife, Pamela Kirby Chapman '83, live in Dallas, Tex. with their daughter.

Pamela Cate Cosner (COM) is an art teacher in the Sevier County (Tenn.) schools. She worked for 2 years with WATE-TV 6 in Knoxville and 31/2 years with WTVF-TV 5 in Nashville as video news photographer. She got her teaching certificate in California and taught elementary school for two years.

Robin Ingram (CBA) is sales manager for Continental Airlines in Cleveland, Ohio.

Carolyn F. Jeter (COM) has been appointed to a third term as a judicial commissioner for Knox County General Sessions Court. Primary duties are with the criminal division. Volunteer interests include the Tanasi Girl Scout Council and Knoxville Police Department Citizens Police Academy.

Annetta K. Johnson (CBA) is manager of human resources development for Champion International Corp. in Hamilton, Ohio. She oversees salary and benefits administration, staffing, workers compensation, labor relations, and organizational development for the mill. She joined Champion in 1983 as an employee relations trainee at its Canton, N.C., mill.

Dr. Don S. Lawson (A&S) is associate professor of English at Lander University in Greenwood, S.C., where he also directs the honors and international programs. He leads a group of students annually on a study tour of Great Britain. Last summer he was one of 12 participants in a National Endowment for the Humanities summer seminar at the City University of New York.

Gerald Harvey McCartha (A&P) has an architectural firm, McCartha Architecture and Associates, AIA, of Charlotte, N.C.

Dr. Dana Gulling Mead (A&S) is a tenured associate professor of English at Elizabethtown College in Pennsylvania. She also directs the professional writing program. Her husband, Andrew D. Mead '85, is a senior mechanical engineer for Sargent and Lundy and a licensed professional engineer. He is active with the Society of Automotive Engineers. They live in Lancaster County, Pa.

Dr. Angela Morgan (A&S) is an associate professor of violin at Augusta (Ga.) State and directs the university's orchestra. She has served as concertmaster of the Lake Charles Symphony Orchestra in Louisiana and performed as first violin with the Chattanooga Symphony and Opera Association, the Tallahassee Symphony Orchestra, Knoxville Symphony Orchestra, and the Clarence Brown Theatre Orchestra in Knoxville.

Doug Sams (A&P) has been promoted to associate partner with Zimmer Gunsul Frasca Partnership, Portland, Ore. He has 12 years of professional architectural experience.

Dr. Niles C. Schoening (CBA) has been named professor of economics and director of the Bureau of Business and Economic Research in the East Tennessee State University College of Business, Johnson City, Tenn. Schoening has been involved in regional economic development in both Tennessee and Alabama for the past 20 years.

J. Alfred Southerland (A&S), Houston, Tex., joined the firm of Ogletree, Deakins, Nash, Smoak & Stewart, PC, as shareholder.

1984

Eric Berner (CBA) is manager of the Evansville, Ind., division of the National Federation of Independent Business. He joined NFIB after 10 years in the transportation industry.

Doug Bristol (A&S) is a member of the music faculty of Alabama State University in Montgomery. He is a candidate for the doctor of arts degree from the University of Northern Colorado, and his compositions are published by UNC Jazz Press and TAP music.

James Buck (AG & NAT RES), Jonesboro, Tenn., is senior territory manager for Virginia, West Virginia, East Tennessee, and Western North Carolina with Fermenta Animal Health, responsible for all sales activities to feed manufacturers, distributors, and dealers.

Maj. Christopher "Chris" Canada (A&S) has been promoted and is serving as the chief of reconnaissance operations at headquarters, U.S. Air Forces in Europe, Ramstein Air Base, Germany.

Amy Harrison Hinton (CBA) is a regional account manager for the Becton Dickinson Consumer Products Division. She recently won the regional account manager presidents club award for North America. She and her husband, Robert Hinton '82 (LAW), live in Knoxville.

Karen Mynatt (COM) is associate editor of the A&E Entertainment Almanac at Inso Corp. in Boston, Mass.

Kim Scholes Scherer (HE) is executive director of human resources at Sportslife Inc. in Atlanta. The Atlanta Committee for the Olympic Games selected her to bear the placard for the country of Andorra during the opening and closing ceremonies. She is secretary of the Atlanta chapter of the UT National Alumni Association and first vice president for the Delta Delta Delta Atlanta alumnae chapter. She is an active fundraiser for the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, Egleston Children's Hospital, and the Daughters of the American Revolution. She was employed by the Department of Defense and the General Services Administration.

Dr. Anthony Simones (LAW), assistant professor of political science at Southwest Missouri State University in Springfield, was awarded tenure.

Bryan Clift (HE) is director of merchandising at Copperfield's Magic Underground restaurant for LateNight Magic Inc. He is responsible for directing the overall development, procurement, and sale of merchandise for the restaurant's first location on Times Square in New York City.

Clifford D. "Cliff" Davis (COM) is supervisor of estimating and senior buyer for Teledyne Brown Engineering in Huntsville, Ala. He worked for GE Aerospace in a similar capacity. He, his wife, Erin, and their son live in Madison, Ala.

Laura Buchanan Johnston (A&P) is a project manager for King and Johnson Inc., Knoxville. Her 11 years of experience include various aspects of project management and design for commercial office and retail clients.

Cheryl & Sheila Williams (A&P), Nashville, identical twin principals of Vision 2 Design, have created a "People of Colour Clip Art Booklet" to benefit the Sanaa Village in Benton Co., Tenn. The clip art booklet illustrates positive images of people of colour in work, home, school, and church settings. Vision 2 Design serves as consultant to the development of Sanaa Village, a rural and urban community healing and redevelopment cooperative.

1986

Douglas K. Bradley (ENG), Charlotte, N.C., is general manager for the moving and storage business he started in 1989 and sold in January 1996.

Jeffrey D. Cupp (COM) received the Diamond Award from Peninsula Healthcare and the Mental Health Association of Greater Knoxville for his work in the mental health profession. He is director of admissions at Peninsula Hospital and manages the referral service. He began his career with the facility eight years ago as a psychological assistant at Peninsula Village.

Dr. Todd Estes (A&S) earned his Ph.D in history from the University of Kentucky in 1995. He is an assistant professor of history at Oakland University in Rochester Hills, Mich. His wife, Cheri Singletary Estes '88 (COM), earned the master of science in library science from the University of Kentucky in 1992 and is a media specialist at Detroit County Day Middle School in Beverly Hills, Mich.

Jerry N. Gannaway (ENG), Benbrook, Tex., graduated from Southern Methodist University in Dallas with a doctoral degree in engineering management. He is employed by Lockheed Martin Tactical Aircraft Systems as an engineering specialist and corporate recruiter. He is an adjunct faculty member in the mechanical engineering department at SMU.

Lynda Faye Jones (COM) has a successful law practice in Nashville. She received her law degree from the University of Memphis in 1989.

Robin Higgins Ledford (EDU) serves as teen coordinator for the Jackson (Tenn.) Recreation and Parks Department.

Monte Martin (COM) is sales/PR director for the Hermitage, home of President Andrew Jackson, and nearby Travellers Rest Plantation in Nashville. She promotes the sites to the tourism industry. She continues to run Monte Martin Design, an advertising and marketing firm with a new office on Music Row in Nashville.

Navy Lt. MacGregor L. McClellan (A&S) has returned to his home port in Norfolk, Va., after completing a 21/2-month deployment onboard the amphibious transport dock ship USS Ponce off the coast of Liberia in West Africa.

Navy Lt. Alan W. Snyder (EDU) has reported for duty with Helicopter Training Squadron Eight, Naval Air Station Whiting Field, Milton, Fla. His previous duty included supporting search and recovery efforts of TWA Flight 800 while serving aboard the amphibious transport dock USS Trenton, home ported in Norfolk, Va.

Dudley J. Delffs (A&S) teaches literature and creative writing at Colorado Christian University, Lakewood, Colo. His third book, The Prayer-Centered Life (a nonfiction book on spiritual discourse) will be released this year by NavPress.

James "Jim" Fink (A&S) has been promoted to general manager of the commercial leasing department of Colliers Halifax in Japan. He has worked and lived in Tokyo since 1990.

Robert W. "Rob" McDaris Jr. (ENG) has joined John Deere Consumer Products in Greer, S.C., as manufacturing engineer. He also serves as an aircraft maintenance officer in the Air Force Reserve at Charleston AFB, S.C. He lives with his wife and two children in Greenville, S.C.

Jeff Patterson (A&S) won the gold medal in the 1996 Student Academy Awards for his master's thesis project at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles. His winning documentary film, Independent Little Cuss, focuses on the challenges faced by nationally known disability-rights advocate Carole Patterson as she prepares to marry a non-disabled man against his family's wishes.

Jenny Patton Stripling (COM), Knoxville, is executive director for the American Cancer Society's East Tennessee region, where she oversees fundraising, cancer control programs, and volunteer management. She and her husband, Mel, have one daughter.

Dr. Penny Blackwood Ferguson (EDU), chair of the English department and 11th grade English teacher at Maryville (Tenn.) High School for the past 27 years, has been selected as one of eight U.S. winners of the State Farm Good Neighbor Teaching Award. State Farm featured the three-volume history of Blount County, Tenn., written by her students in preparation for the Tennessee bicentennial.

Dr. Paul A. Flowers (A&S), associate professor of physical science at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke, received the Adolph L. Dial Endowed Faculty Award for Scholarship/Creative Work.

Louise F. Mahar (EDU) is fitness coordinator at State University of New York College at Cortland. She manages the Woods Fitness Facility in the Park Center and the Tomik Fitness Facility in Van Hoesen Hall and conducts wellness and fitness workshops on campus. An accomplished bodybuilder, she has placed in the Vermont State Bodybuilding Championships and won the 1991 Green Mountain Classic Bodybuilding Championship. Andrea Newbrough McCoy (HE) is a guidance counselor at the high school in Crossville, Tenn. She received her master's degree in educational psychology from Tennessee Technological University in Cookeville, Tenn. She and her husband, Doyle McCoy '89 (A&S), have one daughter.

April Branche Montgomery (COM), Gatlinburg, Tenn., is publishing a new entertainment tabloid, What's Showing in the Smokies, and a monthly real estate guide, The Real Estate Magazine of the Great Smoky Mountains. Her company is M&M Publishing.

Daniel C. Pickens (CBA) is actuarial officer at the Nationwide Insurance home office in Columbus, Ohio. He has been a senior actuary for the past two years. He joined Nationwide in 1991 as an actuarial student and was promoted to actuarial manager a year later. He served in the U.S. Navy Reserves for six years. He and his wife, Christy, and their three children live in Hilliard, a Columbus suburb.

Lt. Steve Bryson (ENG) completed a tour aboard the USS Spadefish in 1995 and reported for duty in the Pentagon with the office of the Chief of Naval Operations. He received the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal for serving as officer of the deck while deployed with the U.S. Naval Forces Central Command in support of Operation Southern Watch in the Persian Gulf. He received the Navy Achievement Medal for services as the ship's communications officer, damage control assistant, and main propulsion assistant. He was certified by the DOE/Naval Reactors as chief engineer for the Navy S5W Reactor Plant.

Marine Capt. Todd S. Denson (CBA) is halfway through a six-month deployment to the Mediterranean Sea with the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit, embarked aboard the ships of the USS Nassau Amphibious Readiness Group.

Michael J. Mills (A&P) received his J.D. degree from the University of Memphis in May 1996. While in law school he also attained his architect's registration and plans to practice construction, land use, and real estate law once he attains his license to practice law.

Guy J. York (CBA) is tax division manager in Arthur Andersen's Cincinnati, Ohio, office. His area of expertise is state and local tax. He is a volunteer at the Freestore Foodbank and is active in his community and local parish, St. James.

Karen Kelley Bowdle (COM), formerly a community relations representative with Lockheed Martin Energy Systems Inc. in Oak Ridge, Tenn., has joined McCormick-Barnes Public Relations in Knoxville. Dr. Erik A. Stilling (COM), Kellogg national leadership fellow, served as an international observer in the 1996 national elections in Nicaragua in October with other Kellogg fellows. He met with Sandinista and former Contra leaders before moving on to Chiapas, Mexico, where he met with Zapatista rebel leaders and Mexican government representatives during their peace negotiations. He was promoted last fall to associate professor with tenure at Nicholls State University in Thibodaux, La.
