Torchbearer: Spring 1998

Facelifts Planned For Landmarks

Two old campus buildings are scheduled for renovation.

The gyms and locker rooms in Alumni Memorial Building would be converted to office, laboratory,
and classroom space in a $10.3 million facelift. The 66,000-square-foot building, completed in 1932, was known to generations of students as the home of registration, All-Sing, Carnicus, convocations, commencements, concerts, dances, and basketball games. (The last intercollegiate menŐs basketball game played there was in 1958, when the new armory fieldhouse, later christened Stokely Athletic Center, was completed.)

The original cost of Alumni Memorial Gym was $300,000; it memorialized UT's alumni war dead.

A $19.4 milion renovation is planned for Hesler Biology Building. A portion of the original building was competed in 1934, and an addition opened in 1964. The building is named for the late Dr. Lexemuel R. Hesler, dean of liberal arts and professor of botany.

The General Assembly must approve funding for the two renovations.
