Dr. Ralph Brockett, professor of adult education in the College of Education, has won a national award for a book he co-authored. Brockett wrote The Profession and Practice of Adult Education with Dr. Sharan Merriam of the University of Georgia. The book earned the Houle Award for Outstanding Literature in Adult Education, presented at the American Association for Adult and Continuing Education conference.

Dr. Leonard Brinkman, professor of geography, received the 1997 Outstanding Service Award from the UTK Library Friends. He was honored for decades of service to the libraries, including inventorying maps, developing a map catalog system, and filling gaps in the map collection. Brinkman supervised the Map Library, now a branch of University Libraries, from 1980 to 1989.

Dr. Robert Uhrig is serving on the Nuclear Regulatory Commission's advisory committee on reactor safeguards. The 12-member committee monitors safety at the nation's 110 licensed commercial nuclear power reactors. Uhrig is a distinguished scientist in the UT–Oak Ridge National Laboratory Science Alliance program.

College of Education Professor Emeritus J. Estill Alexander received the 1997 laureate in reading award from the College Reading Association. This was his fourth national award in the field of reading. He has received all three of the College Reading Association's awards, only the second person in the history of the organization to do so.

C.E. "Mickey" Bilbrey ('71) is the acting executive vice chancellor of the UT Medical Center at Knoxville, serving in the position vacated by Dr. Charles Mercer. Before taking the new position, Bilbrey was executive director of the University Physicians Association Inc. and chief executive officer of the University Health System. He retains the latter position. As acting executive vice chancellor, he oversees University Memorial Hospital and the Graduate School of Medicine.

The awards committee of the Society for Social Work and Research has honored Dr. William Nugent, associate professor in the College of Social Work. Nugent earned an honorable mention
award for an article he had published in
Research on Social Work Practice.

Theresa Leadbetter, assistant director of the UTK Office of Human Resources Management, was elected to the board of directors of the Tennessee Consolidated Retirement System.

Two College of Veterinary Medicine faculty–Dr. Robert DeNovo Jr., associate professor, and Dr. Kevin Hahn, assistant professor–received the college's Lindsay Young Teaching Award. The award recognizes excellence in veterinary teaching and is funded by Knoxville attorney Lindsay Young.

Dr. Ben F. Oliver, professor of metallurgical engineering in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, was named a fellow of ASM International, the Materials Information Society. He was one of 49 people inducted into ASM's class of fellows in 1997.

Dr. John Caruthers has been awarded the B.H. Goethert Professorship at the UT Space Institute in Tullahoma. He is a professor of engineering science and an authority on reducing jet engine noise.

Dr. Peter Cummings received the 1998 research achievement award from the Knoxville chapter
of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers.
Cummings is a UT-Oak Ridge National Laboratory distinguished scientist.
