1949
John A. Evans (ENG), Santa Fe, N.M., spent the 1970s working in educational broadcasting at stations in New Orleans and at the University of Nebraska in Omaha. During the 1980s he produced and programmed commercial TV in Charleston, S.C., but soon left TV in favor of teaching college English at several South Carolina colleges and the Charleston air force and naval bases. From 1989 to 1994 he taught sailors on board eight U.S. Navy warships in the Atlantic and Indian oceans, the Persian Gulf, and the Arabian, Red, Mediterranean, and Caribbean seas.

Edward Riley Anderson (CBA), Knoxville, was sworn in as the 31st chief justice of the Tennessee Supreme Court July 7, 1997. He has been a member of the Supreme Court since 1990 and previously served as chief justice from October 1994 to May 1996.

Kenneth W. "Ken" Goode
(CBA), Chattanooga, Tenn., retired from ABB-Combustion Engineering as manager of traffic after 39 years service.
Katherine Allen Roper (EDU), Tullahoma, Tenn., authored Bands of Love, a WWII American family narrative with a glimpse into the past (Morris Publishing, NE).
Sarah Brandt Strickland (HE), Lakemont, Ga., and her husband, Harry, started a new business in Clayton, Ga. She owned Sarah Strickland Interior Design in Atlanta and Lakemont for 33 years and also was a teacher.

1957
David Madden
(EDU), Baton Rouge, La., published a new edition of his Remembering James Agee. The University of Georgia Press issued the new edition of the book first published in 1972. Madden is director of the U.S. Civil War Center at Louisiana State University. He also teaches Civil War literature and creative writing in the English department at LSU.

1958
Carol Dysart Tapp
(CBA) retired from Savannah (Ga.) State University at the end of summer school 1997. She was honored by the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia with the title professor emerita in recognition of her work in computer and Internet training and with the university's Web pages. She lives in Kennesaw, Ga., with her husband, Lawrence M. "Larry" Tapp '58 (EDU), who retired from Armstrong Atlantic State University in 1994 and also was honored with the title professor emeritus.

Dr. Sheldon Datz (A&S), head of atomic physics in the Oak Ridge National Laboratory Physics Division, Oak Ridge, Tenn., received an honorary doctorate from Stockholm University (Sweden) for his work on physics programs he designed and initiated during a Tage Erlander professorship at the university in 1990 - 91. He is a fellow of the American Physical Society and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He has served as a guest professor at seven institutions in Europe and the U.S., chaired nine conferences, and edited four books. He is the author of more than 200 articles and has held five editorial positions with various journals.
Gail Cunningham Gray (CBA), Cleveland, Tenn., is newsletter editor for Cleveland Utilities. She writes the employee and customer newsletters. Her customer newsletter won an APEX '97 award for excellence. She served on the board of examiners for the Tennessee Quality Award, an initiative to enhance the quality of products and services in Tennessee.
Joe E. Wilson (CBA) retired as a Georgia environmental health specialist. He will operate a small home improvement business, Wilson-Power Corp. He lives in Cumming, Ga.

1961
Dwayne Summar
(CBA), a Nashville-based public relations consultant who worked in Atlanta for 21 years, was inducted into the Order of the Phoenix by the Georgia chapter of the Public Relations Society of America. He also was inducted into the Georgia Public Relations Hall of Fame at the University of Georgia in Athens. He has had his own public relations practice since 1985 except for two years as executive vice president of Atkinson Public Relations Inc. in Nashville. In 1988, when based in South Florida, he was national president of the Public Relations Society of America. He was president of PRSA's Georgia chapter in 1976 and of the Nashville chapter in 1995. In 1994 he was among the first three UTK College of Communications graduates to receive the Donald G. Hileman distinguished alumni award.
Donald E. Williams (AG & NAT RES), Nashville, was appointed a member of the board of directors, J&H Marsh & McLennan, the global risk management and insurance services subsidiary of Marsh & McLennan Companies Inc. He heads the firm's operations in the southeast, including Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, and Florida.

Sindy Barker
(A&S) is executive director of the North Carolina Nurses Association. She also edits the bimonthly publication Tar Heel Nurse and has received two awards presented by the American Journal of Nursing for her coverage of government affairs and economic issues. She and her husband, Brad, live in Chatham County, N.C.
Farrell Brown (A&S) retired as interim dean of the graduate school and professor of chemistry at Clemson University after 34 years of employment. He and his wife, Ann, live in Clemson, S.C.

1963
André Hammonds
(A&S), professor of sociology at Indiana State University, Terre Haute, received the distinguished faculty service award for 1997. The award recognizes service to faculty government, university committees, student organizations, professional organizations, and student groups. Recipients receive a cash award and a tangible symbol of their contributions. Hammonds co-hosts "Jazz We Like It" on WISU-FM and is a fellow of the Center for Teaching and Learning and grand marshal of ISU commencement.

Jerry R. Repass
(ENG) is president of Latin American manufacturing for Eastman Chemical Co., Kingsport, Tenn. He began his career with Eastman in 1965. He is a member of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers and serves on the board of directors of United Way of Greater Kingsport and the board of advisors of the College of Engineering at UT Knoxville. He and his wife, Patsy, live in Kingsport.

Dr. Curtis A. Siller Jr.
(ENG), Andover, Mass., received the Donald W. McLellan meritorious service award of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Communications Society. Siller was recognized for service to the organization's technical programs, committees, and publications initiatives.

1967
Robert Floyd Campbell
(AG & NAT RES), Hope Mills, N.C., retired after 30 years with the Tennessee Department of Conservation's Division of Forestry. He is starting his own business as a forestry and tree specialist. He received the distinguished service award at the annual Hamilton County (Tenn.) Soil District awards barbecue.
Dr. Robert C. Dorsey (ENG) is vice president and chief information officer at Eastman Chemical Co. in Kingsport, Tenn. A 33-year employee of Eastman, he recently served as associate director of information technology. He is a professional engineer in Tennessee, serves on the board of directors of Junior Achievement of the Tri-Cities, and is a member of the Downtown Rotary Club and the Institute of Industrial Engineers. He and his wife, Lou, live in Kingsport.
O.L. Horne Jr. (ENG) is senior technical associate for Eastman Chemical Co. in Kingsport, Tenn. He is a member of Tau Beta Pi engineering honor society and past president of the Indian Springs Optimist Club and RASCALS Teen Center board of directors. He has been with Eastman for 30 years.
R. Lyle Key Jr. (CBA), Nashville, is regional vice president of CSX Corp. He is responsible for legislative and governmental activities on behalf of CSX in Tennessee, Louisiana, and Mississippi. He joined the Louisville and Nashville Railroad, a CSX predecessor company, as a sales representative in 1969. Since 1974 he has held various positions in the law departments of CSX predecessor companies and CSX Transportation Inc., most recently assistant general counsel. He is a past president and national chair of annual giving of the UT National Alumni Association.
Robert C. Kuhlo (A&S) was elected president of the American-German Business Club of Kaiserslautern, Germany. Retiring from the Air Force after assignments in Germany, Japan, and Vietnam, he began a second career in battle simulations and computer support to military operations. He and his wife, Mary Nell, live in Germany.
Bob VanderClute (CBA), Severna Park, Md., is vice president of Parsons Brinckerhoff, Quade and Douglas Inc., an employee-owned, worldwide operating engineering company.

1968
Harold Conner Jr.
(ENG) is vice president of the environmental management and enrichment facilities business unit at Lockheed Martin Energy Systems in Oak Ridge, Tenn. He has been with the company since 1964. He has received numerous awards during his career including an Energy Systems operational performance award in 1985, the National Organization for Black Chemists and Chemical Engineers scientific achievement award in 1987, the UT black achievement award in 1989, and an Energy Systems management achievement award in 1992. He was named eminent engineer in the UT Tau Beta Pi engineering society in 1995. He and his wife, Joyce Ann, live in Knoxville.
Oak Ridge, Tenn., Institute for Science and Education physician Dr. Ronald Goans (ENG) has been chosen to serve on a new scientific committee to develop mathematical models for calculating the amount of radiation received from wounds contaminated with radioactive materials. He is a physician at the Radiation Emergency Assistance Center Training Site. The committee will create models for workers at U.S. Department of Energy facilities and in the nuclear industry, as well as military personnel who received shrapnel wounds from depleted uranium during the Persian Gulf War.

G. Wayne Burchette
(A&S) is manager of process engineering at Eastman Chemical Co. in Kingsport, Tenn. He is a 29-year Eastman veteran. He was a project manager at Eastman Chemical Malaysia. He and his wife, Ruth, live in Kingsport.
Linda Cousins (CBA), Brooklyn, N.Y., is featured writer in the new travel anthology Go Girl! The Black Woman's Book of Travel and Adventure. She is editor of the travel department of The Black World Today, the largest black newspaper on the Internet.

Thomas R. Blose Jr. (ENG), Brentwood, Tenn., was named president of United Cities Gas Co. following the merger of United Cities with Atmos Energy Corp. He joined United Cities as chief engineer in 1979 and was named vice president a year later. In 1986 he was elected senior vice president, and in 1990 he assumed additional responsibility as senior vice president of operations and engineering.

Stephen W. Bocskocsky
(A&S), Milford, Pa., was appointed divisional vice president-Sussex (N.J.) division for the Northwest Covenant Medical Center, part of the Catholic Health System.
Dan Clancy (EDU), Jackson, Tenn., manages the Jackson office of the Anderson Law Firm. He formerly was with the U.S. Department of Justice and was U.S. attorney for the western district of Tennessee.
Dr. George Larry Mays (CBA) of New Mexico State University, Las Cruces, was a winner in the 1997 Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching Program.

1972
Navy Capt. Patrick T. Cassidy (EDU) has participated in several community relations projects overseas while assigned to the guided missile cruiser USS Hue City, currently on a six-month deployment to the Mediterranean and Arabian Sea. While on deployment, he and fellow shipmates have contributed hundreds of hours of volunteer service. They have given assistance to the poor and handicapped of Barcelona, Spain; the city department of parks and recreation in Villefranche, France; a family retreat house and orphanage in Rhodes, Greece; and in soup kitchens and shelters in Trieste, Italy.
Arthur S. Powers (CBA) and his wife, Fran, purchased three North Carolina newspapers-the Watauga Democrat in Boone, the Avery Journal in Newland, and the Blowing Rocket in Blowing Rock. Powers continues to live in Bristol, Tenn., while operating his newspaper company, Powers Publications, full time. He was publisher of the Bristol Herald-Courier for 16 years.

Dr. David R. Black (EDU) is the new president of Eastern College in St. Davids, Pa. He was president of Lakeland College in Sheboygan, Wis., for nine years. He and his wife, Valerie, have two sons.
Joan Tonning Hug (CBA) has been named president of Staples Holdings Ltd., the Bermuda-based holding company for Staples Ltd. and Atlantic Medical International. She was vice president of sales and marketing for Pearman, Watlington & Co. Ltd. in Bermuda. She and her husband, Bob, live in Hamilton, Bermuda.
Karen Thompson Peterman (EDU) is president of the Knox County Education Association. She and her husband, Gary Peterman '76 (EDU), live in Knoxville, where she has been a member of the faculty at Vine Middle School for the past 10 years.
C. Steven Rushing (ENG) is senior technical associate at Eastman Chemical Co. in Kingsport, Tenn. He has been with Eastman for 24 years. He is a member of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers and the Sullivan South Athletic Booster Club board of directors. He and his wife, Erma, have three children and live in Colonial Heights.

Kathy Gideon Browning
(HE), Virginia Beach, Va., is serving a third term on the board of trustees of the National Sales and Marketing Council of the National Homebuilders Association.
Anthony K. "Tony" Street (A&P) is president of BLS (Beeson, Lusk and Street) Architects, Johnson City, Tenn. He has been a partner/owner of BLS for 18 years and spearheaded many projects for the company. He worked for Galloway and Gutherie Architects in Knoxville for two and one-half years. He was also employed by Williams and Associates in Nashville for two years. He is president of the Northeast Tennessee American Institute of Architects, a member of the board of directors of the Elizabethton Chamber of Commerce, chairman of the Northeast Tennessee Technical School advisory board, and a member of the Northeast Tennessee Partnership Technical Prep Consortium.
Michael A. Thomas (A&S) is manager of site support services for Eastman Chemical Co., Kingsport, Tenn., where he has been employed for six years. He is a member of the Institute of Industrial Engineers. He and his wife, Kary, live in Johnson City, Tenn.
Ann M. Ward (A&S) of Lockheed Martin Energy Systems in Oak Ridge, Tenn., has been named associate general counsel and head of the contracts/procurement section of the office of general counsel. She has been with the office of general counsel since 1995 and was part of a team that received the Lockheed Martin Energy Systems president's award for continuous improvement in 1996. She volunteers for the National Kidney Foundation, the Florence Crittenton Society, and Habitat for Humanity.

Joseph F. Bowditch
(CBA), auditor with the Tennessee Valley Authority in Knoxville, was elected
Mid-Atlantic District Three representative for the Institute of Internal Auditors.
Steven D. Downey (A&S) relocated his solo law practice to the historic Armory Building in Bowling Green, Ky.
M. Fran Harmon (EDU), Sevierville, Tenn. was named 1997 East Tennessee Educator of the Year by the Tennessee Association of Middle Schools. She was named 1997 Middle Grade Educator of Sevier County Schools and received a $500 grant from the Wal-Mart Corp., which named her 1997 Teacher of the Year. She recently moved from Pigeon Forge Middle School math department to Sevierville Primary School as assistant principal.
Dr. John W. Howard (A&S), Prattville, Ala., retired from the Alabama Department of Education, where he served as statewide supervisor of foreign language programs, as well as advanced placement coordinator in public schools.

1976
Randal Mashburn
(COM) of Baker, Donelson, Bearman & Caldwell, Nashville, was approved by the Tennessee Commission on Continuing Legal Education and Specialization as a business bankruptcy and consumer bankruptcy specialist. He is one of only three attorneys in Tennessee certified in both the business bankruptcy and consumer bankruptcy areas.
James E. Price Jr. (CBA) is the accreditation and support services manager for the Morristown, Tenn., police department.

Kent M. Culverhouse
(A&P), Roswell, Ga., is director of architecture for Design Build Concepts, Atlanta, a firm that specializes in consulting, design, and construction management for financial facilities in the southeast. He currently has projects in Cookeville, Jellico, and Oneida, Tenn.
Andrew W. Stapp Jr. (CBA) joined Garland McPherson & Associates Inc., Hatfield, Pa., as senior vice president. He works with financial institutions and industry.
Glynis Holm Strause (A&S) was honored as the Speech Communication community college educator of the year by the Texas Speech Communication Association. She has taught 20 years at Bee County College, Beeville, Tex.

David L. Anderson

Patricia Howell Ging (EDU) received her master's in early childhood education from the University of South Carolina in August 1997. She is middle school coordinator for the Montessori Learning Center in Camden, S.C.
Dr. Michael S. Hensley (A&S) is interim dean for academic affairs at Bridgewater (Va.) College. He was professor of biology and dean of academic and student affairs at both John Tyler Community College in Chester and Mountain Empire Community College in Big Stone Gap and also taught at Paul D. Camp Community College in Franklin. In 1990 he received Bridgewater College's first Martha Thornton Faculty Excellence Award. He and his wife, Joy, live near Elkton, Va.
Paul E. Jordan Jr. (CBA) and his investigations firm were recognized as highly rated investigators in the September 1997 edition of Ionique, a newsletter published by ION Inc. Of the 24,000 investigators on the internationally recognized database, Jordan was one of 65 acknowledged by clients as "highly rated." His firm, Paul E. Jordan CC LPI, A Licensed Investigations Co., Stafford, Tex., conducts investigations for attorneys, insurance companies, and financial institutions. Jordan, his wife, Darlene Kidd Jordan '78 (NUR), and their two children live in Fresno, Tex.
Robert W. Sauser (LAW) joined the Chattanooga, Tenn., office of Baker, Donelson, Bearman & Caldwell. He concentrates his practice in litigation. His experience includes insurance defense law including personal injury tort defense, products liability, premises liability, first-party insurance defense, workers compensation defense and civil rights defense of governmental entities.
Professor Eddie Dean Seagle (AG & NAT RES) of the Division of Agriculture and Forest Resources and Department of Environmental Horticulture at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College, Tifton, Ga., received the 1997 - 98 regents' distinguished professor for teaching and learning award from the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia.

Larry D. Bentley
(CBA) was named vice president and chief financial officer of the Krystal Co. in Chattanooga, Tenn. His responsibilities include the redesign of Krystal financial systems and information services and restructuring back office activities.
Robin Robertson Mitchell (A&S) is senior corporate counsel for Advanced Micro Devices in Austin, Tex.
Brian Wenning (ENG) is corporate policy manager at Texas Utilities in Dallas, Tex.
John M. Williams (COM) is president of Sahlman-Williams Inc., previously the Sahlman Co., based in the Hyde Park area of Tampa, Fla.

Etta Ryan Clark (CBA) is senior counsel for Eastman Chemical Co., Kingsport, Tenn. She has been employed by Eastman for two years. She is a licensed member of the Tennessee and Kingsport Bar Associations and a member of the American Corporate Counsel Association. She is also involved with the Leadership Kingsport Class of 1998 and the Washington Elementary School PTA. She and her husband, John, and their two children live in Kingsport.
Sandra Symes Gilbert (NUR), Norman, Okla., received her master's in nursing at UT Memphis in 1985 and worked as a pediatric nurse practitioner on the faculty of the University of Texas Medical School and Texas Woman's University, Houston, Tex. In 1996 she co-authored a chapter in Pediatric Primary Care.
Marshall "Butch" Pierce (CBA) and wife, Shana, recently were appointed as missionaries to the Dominican Republic by the International Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention.
Dr. Timothy Sipe (intercollegiate ecology) is an associate professor in the biology department at Franklin and Marshall College in Lancaster, Pa.
Kevin Turner (ENG) joined Eastco Aluminum as project manager in the corporate engineering group. He is based in the company's Ahoskie, N.C., cast house, where he spearheads the expansion project for that facility. He has more than 20 years experience in various engineering positions with Reynolds Metals Co.

G.T. Hickman
(ENG) was admitted into the partnership of Ernst & Young LLP, Cleveland, Ohio. He leads the health care consulting practice national office efforts in business planning, knowledge management, consulting methods, and tool development. He served numerous academic health system clients and worked as a chief information officer prior to joining Ernst & Young LLP in 1993.
William J. "Bill" McAdams (ENG) was appointed Eastman Chemical Co.'s Asia Pacific manager for its specialty plastics business. He joined Eastman in 1987 after six years in manufacturing and technical service with Dow Chemical Co. Prior to his most recent assignment, based in Singapore, he held positions in technical service, sales, and business management at Eastman's corporate headquarters in Kingsport, Tenn.
Dr. Charles B. Moore (COM), Shelby, N.C., completed his Ph.D. in colonial Spanish American literature at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill and teaches Spanish at Gardner-Webb University in Boiling Springs, N.C.

Charles Exter Hardy III
(A&P) graduated from California State University, Sacramento, in May 1997, with an M.S. in marriage, family, and child counseling. He is pastor of First Southern Baptist Church in Davis, Calif.
Vann A. Newell (ENG), Harrison, Tenn., completed the Ironman Canada Triathlon on Aug. 24, 1997, in a time of 11 hours, 13 minutes, 49 seconds, placing 530th in a field of 1,650 competitors from 37 countries. It was his first Ironman competition, which includes 2.4 miles swimming, 112 miles biking, and 26.2 miles running.
Lisa Wilkens Smith (COM) recently returned from a trip to Hong Kong to promote tourism to Asheville, N.C. She is director of the Asheville Conventions and Visitors Bureau.
Col. Barry N. Totten (ENG), Wahiawa, Hawaii, was promoted to colonel. He recently assumed duty as director of public works, Schofield Barracks, Hawaii.

1983
R. Michael Coker
(A&S), Columbia, Tenn., is clinical team leader for the Maury and Marshall County clinics of Pinnacle Health. He is licensed as a psychological examiner in Tennessee.
Kimberley Strickland Dechiara (HE) is recruiting manager for a law firm in Atlanta. After graduation, she worked for Coca Cola International planning special events worldwide. Her efforts earned her the Future Manager of the Year award.
Dr. Matt Gorham III (A&S) practices dentistry in Nashville with his father, Dr. Matt Gorham Jr. He is a captain in the U.S. Army Reserves.
Kenneth R. Russell Jr. (LAW) joined the law firm of Penn, Stuart & Eskridge as a shareholder in its Bristol, Va., office. He was an adjunct professor in taxation at Georgia State University School of Law and a partner in the Atlanta office of Troutman Sanders LLP. He is a member of the American Bar Association tax section and committee on employee benefits. He is also a member of the Southern Employee Benefits Conference and served as chairman of its legislative committee and as a member of its program committee. While at UT he was an assistant editor of the Tennessee Law Review and was elected to the Order of the Coif.

S. Chrystal Cook
(A&S), a student at Columbia Theological Seminary in Atlanta, received a merit scholarship for 1997 - 98. The scholarship is awarded on the basis of academic achievement, leadership ability, and potential for ministry. She is a third-year student in Columbia's master of divinity program. She formerly was a technical writing and editing consultant.
Sherri L. Goodman (ENG) is vice president of operations for the Cluett Corp., the country's leading supplier of permanent trees, floor plants, greenery arrangements, and floral designs. She lives in Kernersville, N.C.
Derrick L. Herndon (CBA), New York, N.Y., recently joined Toronto Dominion Securities (USA) as managing director and head of the high-yield bond department. He was managing director at BT Securities/Bankers Trust for five and one-half years.
Cheryl Crosby Maddox (ENG), Franklin, Tenn., is director of the southeast region and vice president of Orion Retail, a division of Orion Building Corp. Orion Retail primarily builds anchor stores in malls.
Sabrina A. Mills-Pease (CBA) is district manager for Johnson & Johnson Personal Products Co. Division, responsible for the southeast. She and her husband and daughter live in Charlotte, N.C.
Benita Fitzgerald Mosley (ENG), Chula Vista, Calif., is director of the Arco Training Center, a U.S. Olympic training center in Chula Vista. The center is a 150-acre, warm-weather facility that has a $3 million yearly budget and 35 staff members. She is also president of the Women's Sports Foundation, a nonprofit organization that supports girls and women in sports.
Kevin M. Stephenson (A&S), New York, N.Y., special agent with U.S. Customs since 1987, served as customs representative in the Balkans for two years, working primarily out of the American Embassy in Skopje, Macedonia. He worked in Albania, Bulgaria, Romania, Ukraine, Hungary, and Croatia.
He served as the primary point of contact related to the Serbian sanctions imposed by the United Nations.
Steven VanDorselaer (CBA) is vice president of east sales for Sprint Business, Washington, D.C., the division of Sprint that markets communications products and services to businesses. He has more than 20 years of sales and marketing experience in the communication and computer products industries. He formerly was vice president of sales and marketing for Houston Cellular Telephone Co. and was with IBM for 15 years.
Lee Anne Sharp Weaver (HE) is clinic coordinator for Neurosurgical Associates, a group of eight neurosurgeons in Nashville. She and her husband, Bob, and their son live in Mt. Juliet, Tenn.

Jay Alan Kaiser
(ENG) is research supervisor at DuPont's Marshall Laboratory in the Philadelphia, Pa., automotive products division. His wife, Melinda Renee Tatum Kaiser '84 (A&S), is technical director at the community education center and teaches movement at the Abington Arts Center, Delaware Valley College, and the Curtis Institute of Music.

Charles A. "Chuck" Cerny Jr.
(LAW) has resigned from the Knox County district attorney's office to run for general sessions court judge. The primary is May 5, 1998, and the general election is Aug. 6, 1998.
Navy Lt. Cmdr. Michael S. Eklund (ENG) was recognized for his outstanding achievement while serving as security officer with Naval Reserve Supreme Allied Commander, Atlantic Detachment 113, Battle Creek, Mich. He was honored for his initiative and contribution in helping the command fulfill its mission.
Robert L. Gorham (A&S) is a partner in the law firm of Shaw & Gorham in Birmingham, Ala. His practice is in the areas of personal injury, product liability, medical malpractice, and consumer fraud litigation. He is licensed to practice law in Texas and Alabama.
Sharon Price John (COM) lives in Paris, France, and is the director of European marketing for Mattel's Disney businesses. Previously she was marketing director of Barbie fashions and customized products, where the UT Barbie doll was created. After graduating from UT, she moved to New York City to work in the advertising industry. She was recruited by Mattel from Columbia University Business School, where she was working on her MBA.
Dr. Glenn Johnson (A&S) is an assistant professor of sociology and a research associate in the Environmental Justice Resource Center at Clark Atlanta University, Atlanta. He co-edited a new book that examines transportation racism in the U.S., Just Transportation: Dismantling Race and Class Barriers to Mobility. The book is dedicated to Rosa Parks, mother of the modern civil rights movement, and Cynthia Wiggins, a young victim of transportation racism. The preface is by civil rights activist Congressman John Lewis.
Michael K. Long (CBA) is the new chief operating officer at Pershing Yoakley & Associates, a management consulting and accounting firm headquartered in Knoxville. Prior to joining PY&A, he was the president of Accounting Personnel Services, a division of Cobble Staffing Companies.
Navy Lt. MacGregor L. McClellan (A&S) recently completed a six-month deployment to the Mediterranean Sea aboard the amphibious transport dock USS Ponce, as part of the USS Kearsarge Amphibious Ready Group. During the deployment, his unit participated in several multinational exercises designed to challenge communications, increase task force and unit readiness, and provide desert-like training for marines.
Mellen Moore (A&P) has joined King and Johnson Inc., Knoxville, as project manager. She has worked in South Carolina and Oak Ridge, Tenn., over the last 12 years on a broad range of projects ranging up to a $400 million prison complex. She was project architect for the UT Conference Center in Knoxville.
Peter Y. Wang (ENG), Kent, Wash., completed his final year of law school at the University of Washington and received his J.D. from the American University in Washington D.C. in May 1997. He passed the Washington state bar in July 1997, and is a patent attorney with the intellectual property law firm of Christensen, O'Connor, Johnson, Kindness, PLLC in Seattle, Wash.
Steve Yarnall (A&P), Camden, N.J., was promoted to project manager in the construction and design department of Zany Brainy, a children's retailer in Wynnewood, Pa.

Dr. Elizabeth G. "Gerry" O'Neill (A&S), a research associate in the environmental sciences division of the Department of Energy's Oak Ridge National Laboratory, will serve as an at-large member of the board of directors of the Soil Ecology Society. The society is an international organization of researchers, students, environmental professionals, and others interested in the advancement and promotion of soil biology and ecology. She has been at ORNL for 20 years. She is a former treasurer of the Soil Ecology Society and a member of the Ecological Society of America, American Society for Microbiology, American Hibiscus Society, American Quilters Society, and the Hobby Greenhouse Association. She is married to Robert O'Neill, a research ecologist in the environmental sciences division. They live in Oak Ridge, Tenn.
A paper by Dr. Arthur H. Prince (SW), Memphis, "Hocking's Critique of Certain Ways of Thinking About Rights," has been accepted for presentation at the 20th World Congress of Philosophy in Boston.

Pamela R. McWhinnie (CBA) joined Aeroquip-Vickers Inc., Maumee, Ohio, as an accountant on the U.S. corporate accounting team. Her responsibilities include month-end closings, account analysis, and budgeting. She works with other departments and locations to improve centrally managed processes. She was an accountant for Penske Logistics in Beachwood, Ohio.

Marine 1st Lt. Richard M. Davis (A&S) has completed a six-month deployment with the 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit, embarked aboard the ships of the USS Kearsarge Amphibious Ready Group. He participated in the evacuation of more than 2,500 American citizens from Sierra Leone, conducted jointly with French, Nigerian, and Sierra Leone surface combatants. His ship was also involved in several multinational exercises designed to challenge communications, increase task force and unit readiness, and provide desert-like training for Marines.
