Newspaper Honors WrightUSA Today selected senior Travis Wright as one of 20 members of its 1998 All-USA College Academic Team. Wright, 22, was one of nearly 1,200 nominees for the team, which the newspaper features. Wright, who attended high school in Morristown, Tenn., is a Whittle Scholar at UTK. He founded an organization at UTK called University Students Helping Elementary Schools Reach Success. Members volunteer one hour a week to help teach youngsters about character and values. Wright was a 1997 Truman Scholar, one of only 69 selected nationwide. He received a General Motors Volunteer Spirit Award and worked with the National Points of Light Foundation. He is a participant in the university's College Scholars Program, which has allowed him to develop his own degree path. His focus has been on community development and organization. Wright is scheduled to graduate in May and later plans to attend law school. First though, he says he wants to spend a year working with young people in a rural community. The Torchbearer told you about Wright long before USA Today discovered him. In our winter 1995 issue, Wright was featured as a promising student. Return to Spring 1998 table of contents. |
