Torchbearer: Summer 1996

UTK Works On Java

Sun Microsystems Computer Co. and UTK have joined forces to create a campus SunSITE (one of only four in the U.S.) and a center for the development of Java computer language.

Sun donated equipment worth $85,000 to UTK for the computer site.

"People are excited about Java because it allows software developers and web publishers to make web pages that permit far more interaction with users," says Dr. Terry Moore, UTK network services coordinator.

Internet browsers, such as Netscape Navigator and America Online, created using the Java language will be able to retrieve web pages that contain running animations, 3-D models that can be manipulated, and active spreadsheets. Also, Java programs will deliver software across the Internet, irrespective of computer platform or operating system.

Tom Rittenberry of Sun says UT will develop small programs called Java Applets "that will become a mainstay in the software industry." He predicted the UTK SunSITE would be accessed 2 to 3 million times a day.
