Torchbearer: Summer 1998

Automotive Connections

UT is positioning itself as the "preferred provider" of assistance to the automotive industry in the South.

The University already has cosponsored one major automotive conference, has two others in the offing, and day by day goes about the business of providing technical and managerial assistance tailored to the industry. Officials say they want UT to be to the Southeastern auto industry what the University of Michigan is to the industry's Northern branch.

The Automotive News Southeast Conference last April in Nashville accentuated UT's automotive industry ties. Joining the respected trade publication and Deloitte Touche as cosponsors put UT's name and its services before presidents and CEOs of automotive industry manufacturers and suppliers.

Tennessee has nearly 500 auto-related companies with almost 100,000 employees, or about one-fifth of the state's manufacturing work force. UT has had alliances with Saturn and Nissan for years. UT programs that serve the needs of the automotive industry include its new National Transportation Research Center as well as strong research programs in engineering and business.

In August, UT will cosponsor another major conference in Nashville, the Southern Automotive Manufacturing Conference and Exposition. It will be the first conference the Society of Automotive Engineers has ever held in the South.
