Walk this WayWhat used to be a busy street in the heart of the campus has become a quiet pedestrian mall. Students crisscross the portion of Andy Holt Avenue between Volunteer Boulevard East and Melrose Place at will. Traffic in the area between the library and the Humanities Plaza is strictly of the nonmotorized variety. Plans were in the works for several years to convert the section of Holt Avenue to enhance the campus environment. The street was blocked on a trial basis to make sure trash pick up and emergency vehicle access could be maintained. Last spring, gates were erected at both ends of the pedestrian mall, part of the asphalt surface was replaced with concrete, and large flower pots were added.
