November 6-7


Come home to campus and celebrate Homecoming 1998 on Nov. 6 and 7. There will be a class reunion celebration for the years '53,'58,'63, '68, '73, and '78, and lots of other events open to all graduates and friends. Plan now to be a part of this Volunteer tradition! This is a Homecoming weekend you won't want to miss, so make plans early. For more information, call the UTK alumni office at (423) 974-5432 and ask for a Homecoming brochure. You'll need the brochure to make reservations for Homecoming events listed below. The Homecoming schedule is also available on the World Wide Web at http://www.admin.utk.edu/alumni/.

Friday, Nov. 6

Homecoming Parade

Join other alumni, students, and friends for the annual Homecoming parade featuring fabulous floats, the Pride of the Southland marching band, class reunion representatives, and a surprise grand marshal. The parade follows its traditional route beginning on Lake Loudon Boulevard near Thompson-Boling arena at 2:30 p.m.

Big Band Homecoming "T" Dance
Return to the days of the big band sound with the Al Curtis Combo, performing from 4 to 6 p.m. in the lobby of the Hyatt Regency. All alumni and friends are invited. Admission is free.

Black Alumni Associates reception
The Black Alumni Associates invite alumni and friends to a reception from 5:30 to 7 p.m. in the Riverview Room of the Hyatt Regency. Admission is free.

Black alumni associates banquet/memorial celebration
Starting at 7 p.m., the event will recognize UT Black alumni who are deceased. Theme will be "Looking Back, Looking Forward." The speaker will be announced later. $25/person.

UT Singers Concert
The UT Singers will perform their annual Homecoming show in the Hyatt Regency lobby at 8 p.m. Come enjoy musical entertainment ranging from pop to country to rock. Admission is free.

UT Singers reunion reception
Are you an alumnus of the UT Singers? If so, make plans to attend a special UT Singers' reunion reception at the Hyatt Regency following the 8 p.m. concert by the current UT Singers. You'll receive a separate mailing giving more details and registration information.

Rock 'n' Roll Homecoming Dance
Take a few steps forward and a few steps back at the annual Homecoming dance. Deejay J. Stevens will provide a mix of music. The party is from 8:30 to 11 p.m. in the Hyatt lobby. Cash bar available. Admission is free.

Saturday, Nov. 7

Picnic in the Park
All alumni and friends are invited to enjoy food and fun at the annual pregame picnic in Circle Park. A special "college showcase" tent will provide a place to visit with students and college deans and enjoy displays and exhibits from the Colleges of Architecture and Planning, Arts and Sciences, Business, Education, Human Ecology, and Nursing. A "spirit" tent will host alumni cheerleaders and pom pon squads.

The barbecue buffet picnic starts at 1 p.m. (or three hours before kickoff) and concludes at 2:30 p.m. Enjoy musical entertainment and a pep rally led by alumni cheerleaders and pom pon squads. Space is limited, so make your reservations early, using the Homecoming brochure. $10/person.

Alex Haley Memorial Picnic
The BAA and Black Cultural Programming Committee will sponsor a cookout featuring barbecue and music across from the Black Cultural Center in the Greve Hall courtyard. The picnic begins at 1 p.m. or three hours prior to kickoff. $10/person.

Pregame Showcase
The College of Arts and Sciences invites you to "Reconstructing Faces on Victims of Crime: Forensic Anthropology at UTK," a 30-minute presentation by Dr. Murray Marks, assistant professor of anthropology, beginning two hours before kickoff in Room 235 (Shiloh Room) University Center. Pick up a sandwich and "edu-gate" with us. We'll provide the cookies and soft drinks. Admission is free.

Alumni Coffee
Immediately following the football game, all alumni and friends are invited to a reception in the Hermitage Room of the University Center. Admission is free.

Black alumni associates casino night/dance
Join us in the Hyatt Ballroom for a casino-type atmosphere with gaming tables. Proceeds go to the BAA Scholarship Fund. Casino night is from 8 to 11 p.m., but there's no need to leave. Hang around and join us as we dance into the morning. The dance is from 11 p.m. to 2 a.m. $15/person.

Class Reunions
A special invitation to the Classes of '53, '58, '63, '68, '73, and '78!
Join friends and classmates to reminisce about good memories of days at UT and catch up on all that's new. Make a night of it! All class reunion festivities will be at the Hyatt Regency Hotel.

Friday, Nov. 6

4-6 p.m. Big Band Homecoming "T" Dance

Alumni of all ages are invited to join the Al Curtis Combo in the Hyatt lobby and swing to the sounds of UT as it was in the 1940s and '50s. Cash bar available.

6-8 p.m. Class Reunion Reception and Banquets
Each honor class will be recognized. Reception and registration begin at 6, with dinner at 6:30. All UT class years are invited. Hyatt Ballroom.

8-8:30 p.m. UT Singers Concert
It's not Homecoming without the traditional performance by the UT Singers. This fully staged mini-concert takes place in the Hyatt lobby.

8:30-11 p.m. Rock 'n' Roll Homecoming Dance
The perfect way to cap off the evening-enjoying hits of the Beatles, Bee Gees, and B-52s! Wear your dancin' shoes and celebrate!

Air Force ROTC
Happy 50th anniversary to Air Force ROTC! Air Force grads: Watch your mail boxes! You will receive a mailing that describes the festivities planned to celebrate the 50th anniversary. Join alumni for this celebration that will include guest of honor General Lloyd "Fig" Newton, Air Force commander of air education and training command. College of Communications
Join former classmates, faculty, and friends for a Homecoming family barbecue picnic on Saturday beginning at 2 p.m. (or two hours before kickoff) in the Communications Building lobby on Circle Park Drive. Questions? Call Janine Jennings at (423) 974-3031. $10/person.

College of Engineering
Homecoming 1998 will be the first one held in the new Science and Engineering Building, but that is only part of the day's fun. Many of you have asked about viewing this new facility when you have been on campus; therefore, we will combine the traditional picnic and football game with an open house involving interactive displays and exhibits. This modern building radiates the excitement and optimism we have about the future of engineering at UTK.

Join your classmates and friends in preparing for a victory over the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Complimentary orange and white shakers will be given out before the game. The barbecue buffet picnic will begin at 1 p.m. (or three hours before the game) and end 30 minutes before kickoff. $10/person. Register using the Homecoming brochure.

School of Information Sciences
The school will host an alumni reception from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at the University Club. For information, call (423) 974-2858.

College of Law
Homecoming activities will begin on Friday evening for the law classes of '38, '43, '48, '53, '58, '63, '68, '73, '78, '83, '88, and '93. The event will be held at The Foundry at World's Fair Park from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. and include heavy hors d'oeuvres and a cash bar. $15/person.

On Saturday, all College of Law alumni and friends are invited to gather on the front courtyard of the new law school building for a barbecue picnic. The picnic starts two hours before kickoff. For more information, call Dotti Bressi at (423) 974-2007. $8/person.

College of Social Work
A symposium, "It's Okay To Be Different Because Everybody Is/Interaction with the Real 'Rain Man,' Kim Peek," will be held in the University Center Ballroom Friday from 3:30 to 5 p.m. A reception will follow. No charge for UTCSW alumni, all others, $20. Call (423) 974-6015 to register.

Tennessee Volunteers vs. the University of Alabama at Birmingham Blazers


A very limited number of football tickets is available for alumni attending paid reunion/Homecoming events. You can get one ticket for each paid event, with a maximum of six tickets per order.

You must request tickets using the Homecoming brochure. Ticket orders will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis until the September 11 deadline. Sorry, no football ticket refunds will be issued, and fax or telephone orders will not be accepted. Your tickets will be mailed to you in October.
