Torchbearer: Summer 1998

Once and Present Maya

The newest exhibit at UTK's McClung Museum has a rich patina of antiquity.

"The Once and Present Maya: Portraits of a People" portrays Mayan people of yesterday and today. It is a collaborative effort of the museum and the National Geographic Society. About 35,000 people are expected to see the exhibit before it closes January 4, 1999.

The focus is the Mayan people, with objects and images portraying 10 occupations. There is also a section of original illustrations and rare early publications by explorers and archaeologists.

More than 4 million Mayans live today in Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, and Belize. They are descendants of one of the world's greatest civilizations, which reached its peak between A.D. 250 and 950.

McClung Museum is located on Circle Park next to the Student Services Building. Hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, and 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday. Admission is free. During the week, parking passes for Circle Park are available at the campus information booth at Circle Park. On weekends, parking is available on Circle Park and in adjacent lots.
