Torchbearer: Summer 1998

Center Is about Going Places

UT is a partner in the new National Transportation Research Center being built near Knoxville, a public-private partnership for research and development of affordable, safe transportation.

Partners with UT in the venture are Oak Ridge National Laboratory and several private enterprises.

The center will be housed in a new 5,000-square-foot facility located between Knoxville and Oak Ridge.

The facility will include 12 world-class research laboratories and offices for up to 150 researchers. Space also will be provided for industry partners and government sponsors to work directly with NTRC researchers. The center will draw on the expertise of the UT Knoxville Transportation Center, the College of Engineering, and other UTK units.

Department of Energy Secretary Federico Peņa, in announcing a major equipment grant for the center, said the NTRC would use a public-private partnership to "develop new transportation systems that are affordable and that address the needs of the public safety, security, and convenience."

Focus areas of the NTRC will include: engines, emissions, and power systems; information systems; material, structural, and mechanical systems; vehicles, materials handling, and packaging systems; and safety.
