More for Your Money

High quality and reasonable price won UTK a spot in U.S. News and World Report's "best buy" list for a second straight year. The libraries (the galleria of Hodges Library is pictured) are among the resources that enhance education on campus.

For the second year in a row, UTK is one of the best education values among the nation's major universities.

That's according to U.S. News and World Report, which ranked UTK eighth in its most recent "best value" index based on the "sticker price" for fees. Last year, UTK ranked seventh.

U.S. News' sticker price rankings are based on the magazine's quality ratings of top universities divided by the total of tuition, required fees, and room and board.

UTK fees are $915 a semester for an in-state undergraduate student and $1,139 for a graduate student. A typical student can expect to spend about $6,000 during an academic year for fees, room, and meals.

The top ten best values based on sticker price are:

  • Brigham Young University
  • University of Florida
  • University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill
  • University of Texas at Austin
  • Texas A&M at College Station
  • Georgia Tech
  • University of Wisconsin
  • University of Tennessee, Knoxville
  • University of Georgia
  • Rice University
