Mrs. Caldwell Dies at 106One-hundred-six-year-old Genevieve Rice Caldwell ('08) died last October in Memphis. At the time of her death, she likely was the University's oldest alumnus. Mrs. Caldwell contributed yearly to the UT annual giving program and included notes, which in her later years often alluded to her advanced age. In 1990 she wrote: "This surely will be my last contribution -- maybe not." She earned two degrees from UTK, the bachelor's in 1908 and the master's in 1933. Her daughter, Genevieve Caldwell Phillips, earned her undergraduate degree tin 1933. In 1983, Mrs. Caldwell and her daughter were honored by UT as they celebrated their 75th and 50th reunions respectively. The late Mrs. Caldwell graduated from Knoxville High School and entered UT in 1904. Among the UT student body at the same time were Nathan Dougherty, who became dean of engineering and namesake of Dougherty Engineering Building, and Clarence Brown, the Hollywood motion picture director.
