Deaths

Margaret Anna Giffin Chumley '23, September 16, 1995, Tazewell, Tenn. She had a lengthy career in the Clairborne County Schools and was a charter member of the Sodalitas Club. She was a charter member of Tri-Delta sorority at UT.

William Bruce Boggan '27, September 9, 1995, Memphis. He opened and managed the first hospital in Forsyth County, Ga. He was administrator of the Lauderdale County Hospital in Ripley, Tenn., and purchasing manager for the City of Memphis Hospital (now the Regional Medical Center at Memphis), where he retired in 1974. After retiring, he volunteered daily at the Lewis Senior Citizens Center. He was a member of the Memphis Quarterback Club and a World War II veteran. While at UT, he lettered in track as a long distance runner and was a member of the golf team and Alpha Tau Omega fraternity. He later helped found the ATO chapter at Memphis State University in the 1970s.

Mildred Louise Nance Clotworthy '28, June 13, 1995, Knoxville. She was a retired Knoxville school teacher.

Horace Lynnwood Harper '28, May 9, 1995, Knoxville. He was retired president of Knoxville Paper Box Co. and a member of Delta Tau Delta fraternity.

Mary B. Smith '28, March 1994, Richardson, Tex.

Dr. Lenox Dial Baker '29, June 2, 1995, Durham, N.C. He was a former Duke University orthopedic surgeon who was widely known for treating diseases like rheumatoid arthritis and also contributed to the treatment of children with cerebral palsy.

Agnes Derieux Duyck '29, August 12, 1995, Knoxville. She had retired from Knoxville City schools after 35 years at Brownlow Elementary School.

Eunice Mae Hill Julian '29, July 15, 1995, Knoxville. She had retired from the Knox County Tax Assessors Office after 30 years of service.

Dr. Frank L. Milligan '31, September 11, 1995, Jefferson City, Tenn. A prominent physician and surgeon, he founded the Milligan Clinic.

John H. Goolsby '32, April 29, 1995, Bethlehem, Pa. He was a mechanical engineer.

Herbert Hodges Hall '32, September 3, 1995, Knoxville. He had retired after 32 years with Sears and Roebuck Co.

Margaret Katherine Hockinjos Parker '32, August 19, 1995, Spring Hill, Fla.

Josephine F. Vermillion '32, June 13, 1995, Jellico, Ky. She taught high school Latin, history, and English for 40 years in Tennessee, Florida, and Virginia.

Hazel McBee Beeler '33, July 2, 1995, Luttrell, Tenn. She had retired after teaching for 43 years in Union County schools.

Katherine H. Foster '33, September 13, 1995. She taught in Knox County schools for more than 30 years.

Boyd M. Smith '33, July 29, 1995, Knoxville. A member of the Tennessee football squad in the early '30s, he was a founding director of the Knoxville Quarterback Club. For nearly 40 years, he worked in the men's clothing business in downtown Knoxville, at Schriver Brothers Clothier and Hall-Brown Co.

John M. Soyars '33, May 19, 1995, Whittier, Calif.

James G. Thirlby '33, July 5, 1995, Traverse City, Mich.

Nellie Condra Varnell '33, September 13, 1995, Oak Ridge, Tenn.

James "Jimmy" Dempster '37, June 21, 1995, Collierville, Tenn. A former Ford automobile dealer and Shelby County government official, he was a long time Rotarian, a World War II veteran, and, while at UT, a member of Alpha Tau Omega fraternity. He recently had been honored as Collierville Person of the Year by the Chamber of Commerce for his many years of service to the community.

Paul G. Haaga '37, August 25, 1995, McLean, Va., formerly of Memphis. A retired U.S. Navy commander, he was an officer aboard the LST 388 in North Africa and Europe during World War II and participated in the D-Day landing at Normandy. While at UT, he was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity.

Adrian O. Buck '38, July 11, 1995, Nashville. He was a retired attorney, former state legislator, and U.S. Navy veteran. He practiced corporate labor and transportation law for 42 years, until retiring in 1980 from the law firm of Buck and Baker. He served for 12 years on the UT College of Law Advisory Council. He was also lieutenant senior grade officer in the U.S. Navy.

George M. Krisle Jr. '38, July 29, 1995, Hilton Head, S.C. He retired as head of the Park National Bank Trust Department (now First American Bank) in 1979 and had served in World War II as a pilot instructor in the U.S. Army Air Corps. While at UT, he lettered in basketball and tennis and was president of Phi Gamma Delta fraternity.

William W. "Bill" Hooser '39, June 10, 1995, Houston, Tex. He had retired from B.F. Goodrich Co. as an industrial sales representative and retired as a full colonel from the U.S. Army Reserve. While at UT, he was president of Kappa Alpha Order and head cheerleader.

John E. Lutz II '40, July 21, 1995, Knoxville. He was retired chairman of the board of J.E. Lutz and Co., a locally owned insurance agency. He was awarded the Bronze Star for heroic achievements in the Normandy invasion during World War II and, while at UT, he was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity.

James H. Randolph '40, April 23, 1995, Dallas, Tex., president of James Randolph & Co. Realty. From 1942 through 1952 he was a special agent with the FBI.

Lloyd Plummer Lowman Jr. '41, September 16, 1995, Albany, Ga.

Lindsey Nelson '41, June 10, 1995, Knoxville. He was UT football announcer, sports director and announcer for NBC, announcer for the New York Mets and San Francisco Giants, and a member of the Baseball Hall of Fame. UT's baseball stadium is named for him. He was a World War II veteran, captain, U.S. Army Ninth Division.

Dr. Lloyd Frank Seatz '41, June 21, 1995, Knoxville. He was on the faculty of the agricultural chemistry, agronomy, and plant and soil science departments at the University of Tennessee from 1947 to 1984. He taught and conducted research in soil chemistry and plant nutrition, serving as department head from 1962 to 1984. He was a World War II veteran and a member of numerous professional organizations.

Colonel Olin W. Mintzer III '42, February 24, 1995, Alexandria, Va. He was professor emeritus at Ohio State University, a retired colonel in the U.S. Army Reserve, and a veteran of World War II. He recently retired from the U.S. Army Topographic Engineering Center, Ft. Belvoir, Va. While at UT, he was a member of Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity.

Joseph L. Rosson '42, April 1, 1995, Memphis. He was professor emeritus of Cornell University and a World War II veteran.

Alice Jean Brehm Williamson '42, June 15, 1995, Knoxville. She was the wife of Dr. Perry Williamson and the daughter of UT's 15th president, Dr. C.E. Brehm.

Jana Worley Jones '43, July 5, 1995, Knoxville. She was retired director of staff at Chattanooga Hamilton County Health Department and had been a professor of nutrition at George Peabody College and the University of Tennessee.

Dorothy Mercer "Lynn" Hart '44, July 12, 1995, Sumter, S.C. She had taught elementary school and kindergarten in Hawaii and Washington, D.C. before her marriage. Later, she taught in Alaska, Taiwan, Japan, and other U.S. Air Force bases where her husband (C. Carr Hart) was F.A.A. liaison oficer. She received the "Teacher of the Year Award" while in South Carolina.

Dorothy B. Pilkington '44, August 14, 1995, Knoxville. She was a volunteer at Shannondale Health Care Center and retired Knoxville school teacher. While at UT, she was a member of Zeta Tau Alpha sorority.

Jack Ferguson Copeland '47, June 7, 1995, Madisonville, Tenn. He was a World War II veteran and a retired supervisor with the Farmers Home Administration.

David G. Lea '47, December 31, 1992, Columbus, Ga. While at UT, he was a member of Phi Gamma Delta fraternity.

George Wright Jaynes Jr. '48, July 4, 1995, Knoxville. A veteran of World War II, he was retired after 30 years of service from Sperry-Univac, where he held numerous executive positions, including comptroller for Northern European Operations.

Alfred Russas '48, February 1995, Dearborn, Mich. He was a World War II Navy veteran and a former UT football player.

Charles Thomas "Tom" Carden '50, September 12, 1995, Metairie, La. He was an attorney and president of Carden Oil & Gas Inc. and CTC Minerals Inc. He joined the scouting department of Superior Oil Co. in l950 and founded his own company in 1959, engaging in all phases of the industry as broker, joint operator, and producer. He owned Clear Creek Stud Farm, one of the largest thoroughbred horse farms in the South. He was a member of the Louisiana, Texas, and Kentucky breeders associations and a former legal officer in the U.S. Army, stationed in Alaska and Texas. He was also a member of numerous professional and civic organizations.

Anna Belle Hall '52, July 22, 1995, Knoxville. She had 47 years of professional service as a teacher in Knox and Blount counties.

Carl Houston Dow '53, July 16, 1995, Brunswick, Maine. He was a trainmaster for Atlantic Coastline Railroad in the 1950s and administrative manager of military products for IBM in the 1960s.

Paul H. Graves '53, July 4, 1995, Knoxville. He was a former president of the Oak Ridge Jaycees, president of the Tennessee Jaycees, and vice president of National Jaycees.

Leslie Beard Julian '54, June 9, 1995, Morristown, Tenn. He owned and operated several pharmacies in North Carolina and Tennessee and served in the U.S. Army Medical Corps.

Ora Shoemaker Robbins '55, August 27, 1995, Robbins, Tenn.

Julia Briggs Crisp Waddle '56, January 5, 1995, Hattiesburg, Miss. She taught school in Nashville, Tenn., and Greensboro, N.C., and later at William Carey College, instructing Head Start teachers. While a student at UT, she was known for her musical abilities and played the piano for several All-Sing groups.

William Andrew "Bill" Lyday Jr. '57, July 9, 1995, Knoxville. He was a UT engineering professor for more than 30 years. He was a member of Omicron Delta Kappa national honorary leadership society and had a longstanding affiliation with the Shriners.

Harry Von Price '58, September 15, 1995, San Antonio, Tex. He was retired from UT. During World War II, he flew 35 combat missions over Europe.

Joe Taylor Austin '59, March 2, 1992, Germantown, Tenn. He was senior master sergeant of the 164th Mobile Aerial Port Squadron of the Tennessee Air National Guard and a veteran of the Korean and Gulf wars. The squadron building in Memphis was named in his honor.

Fernand E. "Aucie" Aucremanne '60, June 30, 1995, Knoxville. He worked as an industrial and construction engineer.

Jerry Willis Ogle '63, September 14, 1995, Pigeon Forge, Tenn. He was a retired pharmacist and an entrepreneur in many Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg businesses.

Richard S. Bartlett '68, June 15, 1995. He was director of sales and marketing for Camelot Distributing in Atlanta and president of the Southern Paper Trade Association. While at UT, he was a member of Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity.

Phyllis V. Brock '68, September 15, 1995, Knoxville. She had retired from the Tennessee Department of Human Services.

Dr. Nancy A. Stricklin '68, September 14, 1995, Knoxville. She had recently retired as a professor of English at Pellissippi State Technical Community College.

Susan Hixon Kennedy '70, August 10, 1995, West Palm Beach, Fla. She was associate editor of Palm Beach Today and an active volunteer with the American Cancer Society. While at UT, she was editor of The Daily Beacon and won several Randolph Hearst Awards.

John H. Hogin '71, August 12, 1995, Knoxville. He headed his own law firm and was widely known for his work as a trial attorney in medical malpractice cases. He had served as alumni adviser to Sigma Chi fraternity. He traveled nearly every year to Ireland and Scotland to play golf, having played at Royal Troon and numerous other famous courses.

Sam D. Mount Jr. '71, September 3, 1995, Maryville, Tenn.

Joanna Whittemore Ferrell '72, April 8, 1995, Naperville, Ill.

O. Phillip May '72, July 16, 1995, North Little Rock, Ark. He had been associate pastor at Broadway Baptist Church, Knoxville, and had taught at Carson-Newman College before returning to Arkansas.

Roy A. "Zack" Binkley II '75, June 14, 1995, Fort Myers, Fla. He was executive editor of the Fort Myers News-Press and top editor at the Herald-Dispatch in Huntington, W.Va., from 1987 to 1991. From 1977 to 1987, he was managing editor of the Knoxville Journal and was honored as one of Gannett's 10 best editors in 1992.

James Monroe Nevils '75, July 6, 1995, Oak Ridge, Tenn. He had retired from Union Carbide Corp. as a material planner.

James Daniel "Dan" Hurst '76, July 18, 1995, Greeneville, Tenn. He was systems manager for Phillips Consumer Electronics.

Rikie Kay McDaniels '79, July 31, 1995, Houston, Tex. She was general sales manager for Gannett Outdoor, a founding member of the Greater Houston Women's Foundation, and a director of the Houston Ad Federation and Access Unlimited.

Chris Royston Thompson '80, May 1995, Memphis. He was a former teacher for Shelby County Schools.

Dr. Philip Mark Bounds '81, September 7, 1995. He was a missionary in Santa Cruz, Bolivia.

William Garrett '82, August 15, 1995, Atlanta. He was employed by Nationsbank of Atlanta.

Thomas R. Preston '87, September 3, 1995, Knoxville. He was a self-employed artist.

Andrew "Andy" Limone '89, August 23, 1995, Hickory, N.C.

Betsey Beeler Creekmore, October 7, 1995, Knoxville. She was an author, and historian and was instrumental in starting the Phi Beta Kappa chapter at UTK and Knoxville's Dogwood Arts Festival.
