Enrollment: Ups and Downs

The student body is 51 percent male, 49 percent female.

UTK has 25,488 students this year, about 19,000 of them undergraduates and the rest graduate students.

Enrollment is slightly less than last year's 25,648. The decrease was in graduate and transfer sutdents; first time freshman enrollment was up 20 percent.

Of the undergraduates, 85 percent are from Tennessee. The student body is 51 percent men and 49 percent wormen. African American students are the largest minority group on campus with 5 percent of the undergraduate population.

Enrollment for the statewide university is 41,984 students. Enrollment at the other UT campuses is:

• Chattanooga -- 8,331, up 50.
  
• Martin -- 5,801, up 193.
  
• Memphis -- 2,080, down 15.
  
• Space Institute, Tullahoma -- 234, down 61.
