Vols - Doing Good, Doing Well

Manning named honorary Read-a-Thon chairman

Quarterback Peyton Manning is honorary chairman of the Knox County Multiple Sclerosis Read-a-Thon for this school year. His picture is on the front of the Read-a-Thon kits, and he will host the awards banquet when the campaign is completed.

Angela Whitaker, special events coordinator for the MS chapter, says Manning's participation is "an excellent incentive for students to read, read, read books for persons with MS."

Students raise money for MS by collecting pledges for books they read.

Miller on "Good Works" team

Guard/center Bubba Miller has been named to the 1995 College Football Association "Good Works" team, which honors student-athletes who have done exemplary community service. During the past three summers, he has given an average of 30 hours a week to a variety of programs. Miller is active in the Boy's Club of Knoxville and in Reflections Treatment Agency, a home for juvenile sex offenders. He also speaks at schools and on behalf of the Multiple Sclerosis Society.

Governor Declares Tennessee Football Day

The Vols' 41-14 victory over Alabama last fall was not only a joyous event for the team and for UT fans, but it also instigated a proclamation by the governor.

Gov. Don Sundquist proclaimed Monday, Oct. 16 "Tennessee Football Day" and traveled to Knoxville to present the proclamation to Vol captains Scott Galyon and Bubba Miller and UT President Joe Johnson. Also present were seniors Steve White, DeRon Jenkins, Shane Burton, and Quincy Prigmore.

In introducing Sundquist, Johnson said, "I particularly appreciate the governor's interest in the University of Tennessee, including its remarkable sports programs for men and women. There also wasn't any question he enjoyed the game Saturday night."

Sundquist was in the Vol dressing room after the victory in Birmingham.

"You earned the victory through hard work, tenacity, courage, and sacrifice," the governor said. "It was sweet to win it and win it so decisively. I came to say thanks on behalf of the citizens of Tennessee."

Coach Phillip Fulmer said the team was very appreciative of Sundquist's backing.

"I personally appreciate his support of our football team and being there with us in Birmingham," Fulmer said.
