This is Akima, a Southern white rhinoceros. Southern white rhinoceroses live in savannahs and grassy areas of South Africa. They can grow to be as long as 13 feet and can weigh more than three tons.
Diet
Rhinos at the zoo eat carrots, alfalfa, oranges, and apples.
Conservation
Rhinos are endangered for many reasons. There are fewer than 11,000 rhinos left in the wild, mostly because of the illegal trade of rhino horn. The Knoxville Zoo has one of the most successful rhino breeding programs in the United States.
Did you know?
Rhinos have poor eyesight, but possess an excellent sense of smell. When a rhino detects danger, all the members of the group will stand in a circle with their horns pointing outward.
